Alan McCormack wants to discuss a longer contract at Brentford, with hopes of becoming involved in the club's coaching staff, despite extending his current deal until 2017.
The 32-year-old triggered a year-long extension with his 23rd Championship start of the season against Cardiff on Tuesday night.
McCormack insists he has a few years left in him yet but the midfielder is also attempting to secure his UEFA coaching badges as he begins to think about a post-playing career.
He said: "When the time comes I'll speak to my agent and we'll see if we can bash out a couple of years. The longer and more secure the contract the better, so we'll see what happens.
"The extension is something I knew I could reach if I kept my fitness. I had a groin injury just before Christmas, which kept me out for a few weeks, and then I came back and did my calf. That took six to eight weeks so I missed quite a lot of games.
"You lose your match fitness. I was flying just before that, feeling the fittest I've ever felt. I feel I'm back there now and I just want to enjoy the rest of the season.
"When you're out of contract and you know you can still play, and you've got to go out and get another club, I just didn't want that in the summer, not just yet.
"I've got a missus and two kids, mortgages, bills; financially, things that I've got to keep running.
"I wanted to get it tied down and, with my coaching badges this year, if I can get involved with the club and start coaching then it's something I've got a real passion for.
"If I can get into that after my playing days then it's something I'll looking into starting in the next 18 months.
"I'm on my B badge in the summer and if I can hopefully get that done then move on to the A, and start coaching in the professional game."
