Crystal Palace striker Dwight Gayle was put through a medical at Newcastle on Wednesday ahead of a proposed transfer, according to Sky sources.

It is understood personal terms are already agreed between the Championship club and Gayle, who has been Palace's top scorer in each of the past three seasons.

The 25-year-old is expected to cost Newcastle around £9m and the deal is separate to Palace's pursuit of Andros Townsend.

Sky sources understand Palace are preparing to activate a £13m release clause in the contract Townsend signed at Newcastle in January, although no deal is yet agreed with the player's representatives.

Gayle cost £6m when he arrived at Selhurst Park from Peterborough in the summer of 2013 and has scored 26 goals in 74 appearances, more than half of which have come from the substitute's bench.
