Derby have made an approach to Gary Rowett about succeeding Steve McClaren as manager, Sky sources understand.
Rowett has been out of work since being sacked by Birmingham in December.
Derby will move quickly in making an appointment - they want the new man in charge before Saturday's East Midlands derby against Nottingham Forest.
Sky Sports News HQ has been told talks between Derby chief executive Sam Rush and Rowett's representative are planned for later today.
Derby sacked McClaren on Sunday night after less than six months in charge. It is the second time in three years that the former England manager has been dismissed by Derby.
