David Moyes said defeat for Sunderland was 'harsh'

David Moyes was left to rue a "harsh" defeat as Sunderland's poor start to the season continued at West Ham on Saturday.

The winless Black Cats looked set to hold on for a point at the London Stadium until Winston Reid's 94th-minute strike.

Sunderland are now the first team for 111 years in top-flight history to not win any of their opening nine league games in consecutive seasons.

"It was very harsh," Moyes told Sky Sports. "I was pleased with a lot of the things the players did, it was always going to be a tough game.

"They have some very good players and we struggled in the opening 20-30 minutes, but then we weathered it quite well and had one or two chances ourselves. It was disappointing to lose the game."

Sunderland should have taken the lead early in the second half when Wahbi Khazri was through on goal but failed to beat Adrian.

"It's disappointing for the players because they worked so hard," said Moyes. "We had some big chances to score. We wanted to build some confidence but it's difficult."

There was also some debate over whether West Ham's winner should have stood, with a couple of players seemingly offside when Reid struck his shot.

"It was offside," said Moyes. "I told the referee, he said it wasn't. It's a tough job but it's offside."
