Sunderland midfielder Teemu Tainio has revealed that manager Roy Keane's ambition was the reason for his departure from Tottenham. The 28-year-old Finland international joined the Black Cats for an undisclosed fee in the summer after Keane targeted four Spurs men. Three defeats in their last four games have left Sunderland mid-table with just two points between their 11th place spot and Blackburn in 18th. But Tainio remains confident that progress is being made at the club as they head into the Christmas fixtures.

Progress

"That was the one reason I came here, because I really had a feeling the club wants to move forward," said Tainio. "We have had lots of new players come in and that is never easy. But that's not an excuse, lots of teams change players. "We have some important league games coming up. This is an important part of the season, so we have to be ready for it." The midfielder admits that he also has personal targets after managing just five starts and one substitute appearance for the club. Thigh and shoulder injuries have limited his opportunities so far this campaign but an appearance last time out in their 2-1 win at Blackburn has motivated him to push his way into the first team.
Frustrating
"I have been enjoying my time," added Tainio. "The only problem is I haven't played as much as I would have wanted. "In the first game of the season, I got the thigh problem. I came back and then I had the shoulder problem. "It is frustrating watching the lads from the stand, but now I am fit again, and hopefully it stays that way. "Now I have got my chance, I have to take it. We have to work hard for the manager so everybody is fit and ready to play."
