Sunderland have confirmed that Connor Wickham is to undergo a scan to determine the severity of his knee injury.
The 18-year-old suffered suspected ligament damage during Saturday's 1-0 reversal at Manchester United.
He lasted just two minutes of that fixture before being forced from the field.
Black Cats boss Steve Bruce was in a pessimistic mood after the game when pressed on Wickham's fitness.
Sunderland are still in the dark regarding the full extent of the problem, but will send the England U21 international for medical tests in an effort to shed some light on the issue.

A statement released on the club's
official website read: "The youngster, who has made nine appearances for the Black Cats this season, is set to have his knee looked at to assess the full extent of his injury and results will be known in the coming days."
Should Wickham be sidelined for a prolonged period of time, Sunderland will be left with just two senior strikers in the form of Nicklas Bendtner and South Korea international Ji Dong-won.
It is understood that there is no chance of Asamoah Gyan being recalled from a season-long loan spell at Al-Ain in the United Arab Emirates, so Bruce will be left desperately short on options.
He has, however, welcomed news that Fraizer Campbell is three months ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation from a serious knee injury and could be ready for a first-team return in the New Year.
