Black Cats defender feels O'Neill has inherited a good team

Sunderland defender Wes Brown insists that Martin O'Neill will do a good job with the Black Cats but he also believes that his team's confidence needs to improve. O'Neill officially took charge of Sunderland on Monday just a day after watching his new club slip down to 17th in the Premier League after losing 2-1 to Wolves. Kieran Richardson had given Sunderland the lead but, after Sebastian Larsson had missed a penalty, Wolves went up the other end to equalise through Steven Fletcher, who then scored a late winner. Brown feels that he is playing with a solid team and he believes it will just be a matter of time until the Black Cats start picking up the points. "He (O'Neill) has inherited a great team with good quality, we just need to start gelling and winning games," said Brown to Sunderland's official website. "When we missed the penalty you could see heads going down and that's what we don't need, we needed to stay focused. We were winning the game 1-0, very comfortably I thought. "But we missed the penalty and within a minute they scored. Suddenly they were attacking us and we got our heads down. We were maybe feeling sorry for ourselves and the rest is history." The ex-Aston Villa manager met his players for the first time on Saturday but caretaker manager Eric Black took control of the team at Molineux. "He (O'Neill) didn't say much to us on Saturday, he just introduced himself, said hello to everyone," said Brown. "He was at the game but he left most of it to Blackie."
