Sporting Kansas City new boy Johnny Russell says he felt the time was right for a move to MLS.
This weekend, however, Russell may be keeping an eye on events across the Atlantic, because his old team Derby face Nottingham Forest on Sunday, live on Sky Sports Football, in a derby the Scottish wide man describes as "massive".
The 27-year-old joined Derby back in 2013 and established himself as a fan favourite over the course of more than 200 appearances, before signing a three-year deal with Kansas City in January.
Russell's debut ended in a 2-0 loss to NYCFC on Monday but he is confident his move will work out well in the long run.
Asked about the switch, he told Sky Sports: "I had sort of heard a little bit about it, but nothing serious.
"Then I came into the last six months of my contract, and my agent was contacted by (former Kansas City player and Scotland international) Mo Johnston, just asking if I would be willing to make the switch.
"It is something I had been thinking about, I have always wanted to go and play in a different country. I have always loved the time I have spent in the States and it felt like the right time and the right decision for me and my family.
"We didn't get off to the start that we wanted but it is an extremely difficult league and we played against a really good team. We are looking to build on that now. From what I have seen, so far it (Kansas) is a beautiful city."
Russell has featured in many local rivalries during his career but says Derby-Forest has been one of the most passionate.
"It's massive," he said. "Pretty heated as well. I have played a in a few derbies and that one was pretty special. It is one that I have a lot of fond memories of - and some not so good memories. But it is a game I loved and always looked forward to."
Russell earned his place in Derby-Forest history when he scored a superb goal during a 5-0 win for the Rams at Pride Park in 2014.
"Probably the cleanest I have ever caught a ball in my life," he said. "And it flew in. To score any goal is always a great feeling but to score in such a big game in front of your home fans, it is probably the highlight of my Derby career."
