Stoke have approached Derby for permission to speak to their manager Gary Rowett, according to Sky sources.
The Potters are currently searching for a new manager after the departure of Paul Lambert last week following their relegation from the Premier League.
Rowett was previously linked with the Stoke manager's job in January following the sacking of Mark Hughes, but opted to stay at Derby and signed a new three-and-a-half-year deal.
The 43-year-old led the Rams to the Championship play-offs this season, but suffered defeat to Fulham at the semi-final stage.
Rowett is believed to be keen on the possibility of moving to Stoke due to fears he will have to cut the wage bill of the Derby squad to ensure they are within Financial Fair Play rules for the coming season.
Sky Sports News understands Derby owner Mel Morris is reluctant to let Rowett leave the club.
Former Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy and ex-Leicester boss Nigel Pearson are also on Stoke's shortlist as they aim to replace Lambert.
