Former Preston defender and Australia international Joe Marston has passed away at the age of 89, the Sky Bet Championship club have announced.

Marston, who made 185 appearances for the Lilywhites during a five-year spell, made history as the first Australian to appear in an FA Cup final when he lined up alongside Sir Tom Finney at Wembley in 1954.

The former international, capped 37 times by the Socceroos, died early on Sunday morning of natural causes.

Marston appeared for Preston between 1950 and 1955, before he returned home for the remainder of his career due to homesickness, eventually going on to coach the national side.
