The Midlanders remain in a battle to avoid relegation with just a handful of matches to play in this season's Premier League.
The Baggies are currently three points above the relegation zone although their plight would have been eased had they not thrown away healthy leads in their last two home matches.
Against Cardiff they led 2-0 and 3-2 before drawing 3-3, which was also the result two weeks later against Tottenham when they were three-up inside 31 minutes.
In both of these matches they conceded last-gasp equalisers and could easily be four points better off.
And Mel said: "What we need to do against West Ham is go out with the same attitude we showed in the first halves against Cardiff and Tottenham.
"We need the players to be ready, both physically and mentally.
"Before the Norwich game, when we won 1-0 at Carrow Road, we spoke about the importance of clean sheets - we talk about it so often that it seems so difficult for us.
"Scoring goals for us seems rather easy and we need to find a balance between the two.
"In this game against West Ham we need to be very smart about things."
