Tottenham centre-back Federico Fazio is at West Bromwich Albion for a medical this morning.

The clubs are understood to have agreed a £5m fee for the player, who only moved to London from Sevilla last year.

Newspaper reports have suggested the defender could be used as a makeweight in a deal to take striker Saido Berahino to White Hart Lane, but Baggies boss Tony Pulis - speaking at Friday's press conference - insists it is not part of any other agreement.

"The lad is here and having a medical and we're hoping to get it done," he said. "He's a very good defender coming from a top club in Tottenham and the boy wants to play regular football.

"He wants to show that he can not only compete but do well in the Premier League and I think that ambition, drive and desire is what you need in your club. He's been a top player for Sevilla and I think he will be a top signing for the club.

"That deal has nothing to do with Saido's position at the football club. We want Saido to stay. You never say never but we want him to stay. It would be in his best interests."

Fazio cost Tottenham £8m when Mauricio Pochettino recruited him 12 months ago from La Liga, where he had spent seven years with Sevilla's first-team.

The 28-year-old – a three-time capped Argentina international – made 32 appearances in all competitions last season but he has fallen down the pecking order this term after Pochettino moved the strengthen his defence once again this summer.

He brought in Toby Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid after he impressed on loan at Southampton and also signed Kevin Wimmer from Cologne.

Alderweireld has partnered Jan Vertonghen in both of Tottenham's games so far, with Fazio not even making the bench on either occasion.

Albion have been seeking to strengthen defensively after losing their Premier League opener 3-0 at home to Manchester City then drawing 0-0 with Watford last weekend.

They have so far signed defender James Chester from Hull but their current first-choice centre-back Joleon Lescott is reportedly the subject of interest to Aston Villa.
