Southampton boss Ronald Koeman does not want Victor Wanyama to change his style of play despite a dreadful disciplinary record this season.

The midfielder returns to the Saints side on Sunday, when they take on Liverpool in the Premier League, after serving a five-match ban for his third red card of the campaign.

Wanyama has already missed eight games through suspension in 2015-16 and Koeman hopes the Kenya international has learned a lesson, even if he does not want him to change his tough-tackling style.

"First of all I like aggressive players and physical players," said Koeman.

"In the Premier League you need those kind of players. But it's about being clever and what position on the pitch you make a fault, and if not then we tell the players to stay on their feet, and he needs to learn from that.

"I don't like to change Victor, because if I change the player then he is not what he needs to be. In some details, in physical contact and battles, you need to be clever and stay on your feet, but I don't want to change the player.

"Everybody knows players have to learn from mistakes. That's not a problem. He had time enough to think about his situation. We spoke about it and, okay, no problem."

Southampton suffered their heaviest home defeat in 56 years against Liverpool earlier this season - a 6-1 thrashing in the Capital One Cup - but Koeman says there has been no talk of Sunday being a revenge mission.

The teams will kick off level on 44 points, with Southampton seventh and Liverpool in eighth, but the visitors have a couple of games in hand as they look to secure a Europa League place, at the very least.

"It's not about revenge," Koeman added. "If there is any revenge feeling from the players then maybe that's good, but we have to learn from our mistakes.

"That night they showed us how to be clinical with really high-quality movements in attack and we gave them the space to punish us and that's what we have to learn, to be more compact and more aggressive.

"I'm expecting a difficult game. They have really strong team, and they have lots of options. They have just had two good results against Manchester United.

"It was a must-win game for us against Stoke and it's the same this weekend."
