Mark Hughes tips youngster Tom Edwards to continue in Stoke first-team after debut

Edwards was given his first-team debut during Stoke's embarrassing 7-2 defeat at Manchester City.

The 18-year-old assisted in Stoke's second goal, but was later stretchered off with an ankle injury early in the second half.

Edwards was promoted to the first-team squad a few months ago, a thigh injury, however, prevented him making his debut earlier.

"I thought he did really well in difficult circumstances to be perfectly honest," Hughes said. "He would have played before now if he hadn't have picked up an injury in pre-season because I think he's ready to play first team football.

"He's a player we have high hopes for. He's certainly not the finished article but he works hard, has an appetite to learn and deserved his opportunity."
