Stoke boss Mark Hughes says his side did not deserve to lose as their defending left him frustrated following a 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace.

Mark Hughes says his Stoke side deserved more from their 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Stoke took the lead but were pegged back by a Ruben Loftus-Cheek equaliser two minutes after Xherdan Shaqiri's opener, with Mamadou Sakho securing the points for Crystal Palace in injury-time.

The loss of a point late on left Hughes criticising his defence, with the result ensuring the Potters stay in 15th place in the Premier League.

"We didn't deserve to lose, but we didn't defend correctly on two occasions and you're going to get punished and that's the story of the game, really. It should have should have been about a fantastic individual goal from Xherdan Shaqiri who put is in a winning position once again but unfortunately we weren't able to keep the lead for long enough.

"The frustrating thing is we could have avoided the two goals just by clearing our lines."

Crystal Palace 2-1 Stoke

Palace failed to lift themselves off the bottom of the league with the win, but Hughes acknowledge the luck was with the hosts at Selhurst Park.

"They're fighting for their lives and they need a bit of luck and they got that by getting back into the game very quickly and at the end of the day. Maybe it's a sign their luck is changing.

Hughes felt it could have been a different result if Stoke could have taken their chances, with the main culprit being Ryan Shawcross who missed an open net late on.

"We had good moments in the first-half and I thought any of two or three good moments where we just didn't pick the right pass or the right quality with the ball or picking the pass with the right appreciation, that was the story of the first-half.

"In the second half we produced good moments and in my view you have to take them."
