Stoke boss Pulis says defender remains in his plans

Stoke City manager Tony Pulis has insisted there is 'no way' Ryan Shawcross will be leaving the club on loan before January. Reports had linked Championship club Ipswich Town with a loan move for the former Manchester United defender. However, Pulis has stated that Shawcross remains in his plans, and has challenged the 20-year-old to press for a regular first-team place. Pulis told The Sentinel: "Ryan is a big part of what we are trying to do here. I have great respect for Ryan as a person and for what he has achieved with us so far.

Competition

"There's no way he's leaving this club in this loan window. At the end of the window we will obviously take stock, but I'm hoping Ryan will have shown the right spirit, character and work ethic to get back in the team. "That's the challenge in front of him now and it's one I'm sure he will tackle with relish because he's that kind of character. "Also, we are still in the Carling Cup and need good competition for places at the club anyway. We are not going to let players go who are in or around the team - and that goes for Glenn Whelan too. "If you look at clubs in the Premier League you'll see they have good players not in the team because you need big squads."
