Sheffield Wednesday chairman defends Megson axe

Sheffield Wednesday chairman Milan Mandaric has revealed he hopes to name a replacement for Gary Megson within the next 24 hours. Megson was axed on Wednesday night after just over a year in the job and 72 hours following the Steel City derby win over promotion rivals Sheffield United. Wednesday currently sit in third spot in League One, five points adrift of automatic promotion, but Mandaric felt the decision to part with Megson was in the long-term interests of the club. Former Cardiff City and Wolves boss Dave Jones is the overwhelming favourite for the post at Hillsborough and Mandaric admits they are working hard on appointing a new man at the helm. "We are trying very hard and hopefully we can announce the new manager in the next 24 hours," Mandaric told Sky Sports News.

Fallen down

"It was always our objective to get out of this league and we have fallen down lately and whoever comes here will have to get us out of this league." Mandaric also defended his decision to sack Megson despite coming in for widespread criticism for his actions. "It was very a hard decision but it was the best decision for our supporters," added Mandaric. "It was not done for me or for anyone else, it was done for the best of the club."
