Ipswich have been given permission to speak to St Mirren manager Jack Ross about succeeding Mick McCarthy.
Ross won the Scottish Championship with St Mirren this season, promoting them back to the top flight for the first time since 2015, and he was named PFA manager of the year for his influence.
St Mirren won 23 of their 36 games this season, scoring 63 goals in the process, and their success has attracted Ipswich, who finished 12th in the Championship without McCarthy at the helm.
McCarthy quit as manager ahead of schedule following a win over Barnsley in April, branding a section of his own fans "pathetic" and "disgraceful" for their treatment of him.
The 59-year-old was due to stay in charge until his contract ran out at the end of the season but quit after deeming his own position untenable.
McCarthy had been in charge at Portman Road for six years and brought long-term stability to a club operating on a modest budget in the second tier.
Ipswich won 17, drew nine and lost 20 of their 38 games this season, however, and at one stage looked to be part of the relegation fight.
