Joey Barton is training with his former club Burnley having had his contract terminated by Rangers earlier this month.

And Clarets boss Sean Dyche has not ruled out the possibility of Barton re-joining the team in the new year.

The 34-year-old midfielder played a key role in Burnley's Championship success last season but joined Rangers in the summer.

However, he only managed eight appearances for the Glasgow club before he was suspended following a training ground argument.

He subsequently had his deal terminated and is now keeping in shape at Burnley's Barnfield training centre.

Dyche said: "I said last week if he needed us and wanted to come in he'd be more than welcome, which he is, and he's been training with us for a number of days now.

"He's not with the first team, he's doing background fitness work with the sports science team. That's an ongoing thing until things change in the future.

"He's just enjoying being back in and getting himself fit. He was generally fit of course but he's just topping up.

"He'd had an indifferent time, with different things going on in Scotland, so it's about getting him fit and sharp.

"That's good for him, who knows about us? We'll take that on when I see fit."

Barton will be eligible to sign for a new club when the transfer window opens in January.
