Burnley recorded a net profit of £22.2m in the year covering their first season back in the Premier League.

The Clarets, who returned to the top flight in 2016 after a one-year absence, posted the figure for the financial year ending June 2017.

That profit, compared to a net loss of £3.74m for their last year in the Championship, helped fuel the current season's excellent performance.

Sean Dyche's team are seventh in the table with eight games remaining and heading for a third successive year in the top flight.

After promotion, turnover tripled to £121m and total staff costs increased from £38m to £61m.

Having been relegated after their previous campaigns in the Premier League in 2010 and 2015, the club now feel in a better financial position to compete but will still be careful regarding spending.

Chairman Mike Garlick said: "We believe we now have a wage structure capable of attracting playing talent of a sufficient ability to vastly improve the chance of maintaining our place in the top flight, compared to our previous attempts.

"It is also worth noting that while our profits appear very healthy, we do have to maintain a very close eye on cash flow and keep a very close watch on all our costs.

"There are so many examples of clubs that lose their grip on this area and, upon relegation, disappear into relative oblivion, or suffer distressing times for several reasons, which of course is something we must avoid."
