Canaries boss felt his side were 'excellent'

Norwich boss Paul Lambert admitted his side's 2-1 defeat at home to Manchester United was simply gut-wrenching. Ryan Giggs marked his 900th appearance for the Red Devils with a stoppage-time winner at Carrow Road. Paul Scholes had given the visitors an early lead with a close-range header but Grant Holt restored parity with seven minutes remaining. United, however, were not to be denied as Giggs stabbed the ball home from close range at the far post to send the travelling fans home delighted. And Lambert told Sky Sports: "I thought we were excellent. We played really well, but that happens. Bit disappointed to lose a goal at the death, but they've done that for years and years and years.

Massive effort

"The lads were running on empty towards the end but it was a massive effort. A huge effort and I thought we were maybe worthy of a point. "That's what good teams do, keep going until the end and Manchester United have done that for years and years." The Scot had to pick his players up in the dressing room and he added: "It's nothing to be ashamed off. As I said, we were well in the game. They gave a great account of themselves, playing really well in parts of the game. "The goal we scored was a really fitting goal for the game and at the end we were running on empty."
