Easton handed armband after signing one-year deal

Craig Easton has been named Southend United captain after becoming one of five players to join the League Two club. The midfielder signed a one-year contract at Roots Hall on Friday after leaving Swindon Town earlier in the month. Shrimpers boss Paul Sturrock believes the former Dundee captain, who has made close to 400 professional appearances, is the ideal choice to skipper the club this season. "Craig is someone I know very well and I have worked with previously," Sturrock told the club's official website. "He is 31-years-old and has made nearly 400 career appearances so he is certainly experienced.

Natural leader

"Craig will show a terrific work ethic in matches and he is a natural leader in my opinion. "He's not been captain before when we have worked together, but I know he will grow into the role at Southend." On Friday, Sturrock also signed Sofiene Zaaboub, Ryan Hall, Blair Sturrock and Mohsni Bilel on one-year pre-contract agreements pending their registration. Midfielder Zaaboub worked under Sturrock at Swindon, youngster Hall came through the ranks at Crystal Palace, Bilel has been on trial with the Blues for the past week and Sturrock's son Blair has played for Plymouth, Kidderminster, Rochdale, Swindon and Mansfield.
