Southend have signed defender Jason Demetriou from Walsall and winger Jermaine McGlashan from Gillingham.

Demetriou, 28, will officially join on July 1 when his Walsall contract expires.

"When the offer came about it perked my ears up," Demetriou told Southend's official website.

"I can see the potential of the club and it's going places, the manager has a good vision for the team, so it in the end there was a lot of boxes ticked for me.

"I'm really looking forward to getting started now, we've got a good squad here and I think we'll be up there this season."

London-born right-back Demetriou started out at Leyton Orient and made 167 appearances for them before joining Cypriot side Larnaca in 2010.

He moved on to Anorthosis Famagusta in 2013 and returned to England in July 2015 to sign for Walsall, for whom he featured on 53 occasions last season. He has made 28 appearances for Cyprus.

Meanwhile, Southend will also sign McGlashan on a two-year deal.

The winger has agreed to join United, subject to a medical, when his contract at Priestfield expires at the end of the month.

McGlashan has the option of a third year at Roots Hall and could make his Shrimpers debut against Gillingham on the first day of the Sky Bet League One season in August.

McGlashan told the club's official site: "I spoke to a few clubs once the season ended and once I met (manager) Phil Brown he sold the club to me and the direction of where they are going.

"I've played against Southend a few times, I know one or two players here and there's some quality players in the squad so my mind was pretty much made up after I met with the club.

"I went away and had a think about it and came back feeling no different so I'm very excited for the season ahead.

"People that know me know that I've got a lot of pace and I like to get at the full-back and I really want to add goals and assists to this team."
