Striker turns down offers from Orient and Grimsby

Adebayo Akinfenwa has snubbed interest from Leyton Orient and Grimsby Town to sign a new contract at Northampton Town. The striker joined the Cobblers in January on a short-term deal and scored seven goals in 15 League One appearances for Stuart Gray's side. He was offered a deal to stay at Sixfields, but also discussed moves to Grimsby and Orient, whose manager Martin Ling was confident of signing Akinfenwa. However, the 26-year-old has accepted a 12-month contract with Northampton, with the option of a further year, much to Gray's delight.

Loyalty

"I am delighted that Bayo has signed," Gray told the club's official website. "Bayo was within his rights to talk to other clubs, but I am delighted that he has shown us some loyalty. "He did very well for us when he came in last season and I think he is enjoying it here. He is popular in the dressing room and the fans love him, and now he has a bit of security I hope he can kick on and we will really see the best of him. "We wanted to keep him and he wanted to stay and I am delighted we can continue to plan for next season with Bayo now a part of those plans."
