Oldham Athletic have beaten off competition from Rangers to sign Northern Ireland Under 19 international Michael McKerr.
The right-back was available on a free transfer after being released by Birmingham City following two years with the Premier League new boys.
He was wanted by Rangers after previously impressing against the SPL champions in a friendly during his time at Glenavon.
However, he has opted for a 12-month contract at Oldham to become manager Dave Penney's latest recruit of a busy summer at Boundary Park.
Meanwhile, another new Latics signing is set to miss the start of the season after Rob Purdie was booked in for minor surgery on a stomach problem.
Penney said: "Rob is to undergo minor surgery which we hope will help sort out what has been troubling him."
