Wigan have secured their return to the Sky Bet Championship at the first attempt after they defeated relegation-threatened Blackpool 4-0 at Bloomfield Road.

The Latics went into the Saturday lunchtime game knowing a point would be enough to see them promoted and the match remained goalless for the opening hour.

Chris McCann broke the deadlock when his shot from outside the area was deflected in before Yanic Wildschut scored twice in three minutes to put the result beyond doubt.

The Dutchman's opener came on 70 minutes when he finished neatly following some good work in the build-up from McCann.

He duly followed that up with a precise finish after Will Grigg had flicked the ball through to him, Grigg himself completing the scoring when he headed home from a corner, to leave the 3,000 travelling fans in celebratory mood.

In contrast, some Blackpool supporters staged a protest before the game against the ownership of the Oyston family, with a plane carrying the message 'Oystons - club killers get out now' flying over the marchers as they made their way to the ground.

Following their defeat to Wigan, a win for Fleetwood away to Walsall on Monday would see the Seasiders succumb to back-to-back relegations.

Elsewhere in League 1, Millwall and Bradford secured places in the play-offs courtesy of victories over Oldham and Southend, respectively.

Byron Webster gave the Lions the lead after just five minutes at The Den when he headed home a corner, with Shane Ferguson doubling their advantage five minutes before the break when he nipped in to score at the far post.

Webster then scored his second of the afternoon after he reacted quickest to Steve Morison's flick-on to make it 3-0.

Bradford required just the one goal to see off Southend at Roots Hall, where Lee Evans' 20-yarder into the bottom corner on 12 minutes proved to be the difference between the sides.

Burton are on the brink of automatic promotion but, like a number of teams in the division, they must wait to see the result of Fleetwood's trip to Walsall on Monday lunchtime.

Barnsley are still clinging onto the final play-off berth on goal difference after they were held to a 2-2 draw at Oakwell by already-relegated Colchester.

George Moncur gave the U's the lead three minutes before the break but Ashley Fletcher drew the Tykes level on 57 before taking them into the lead 10 minutes from time when he nodded in.

But the Essex side were not to be denied and Tom Lapslie headed home in the eighth minute of time added-on to earn a point.

Chesterfield secured their third-tier status for another season after they eased past Bury 3-0, while Shrewsbury are safe despite going down 4-3 at home to Peterborough after Doncaster lost 3-1 at bottom club Crewe in a game that did not kick off until 3:30pm due to heavy rain at Gresty Road.

That result means Rovers are all-but relegated, with Darren Ferguson's side three points adrift of Fleetwood having played a game more and with an inferior goal-difference.
