Veteran striker to prolong his playing career at Bloomfield Road

Veteran frontman Kevin Phillips has signed a one-year contract at Championship outfit Blackpool. The deal includes the option for a 12-month extension to be taken up next summer. Skysports.com revealed last Thursday that the 37-year-old striker was set to seal a move to Bloomfield Road. Having seen his contract expire at Birmingham, Phillips was cast into the free agent pool this summer. His vast experience and impressive goalscoring record appealed to Blackpool boss Ian Holloway and he has offered the former England international the opportunity to prolong his playing career.

Exciting

"I did a fair bit of work last year for Sky television watching Blackpool when I was commentating," Phillips told the club's official website. "Like everyone else in the country, I enjoyed watching Blackpool play and creating chances. "It was exciting to watch and Ian Holloway is an infectious manager. That was certainly a major factor in me wanting to join Blackpool. "I've scored many goals in my career and I still believe I've got many in me. "Hopefully I can get on the end of a few of those chances that we create."
Character
Blackpool are confident Phillips will prove to be a useful attacking weapon next season, with chairman Karl Oyston expressing his delight at wrapping up a deal. He told Sky Sports News: "Kevin's in Portugal with the rest of the squad. We're pleased about that. Ian's delighted because he was one of his primary targets. "Kevin's done very well wherever he's been. A very, very good pro and a good character around the place."
