Garry Monk admits he is concerned with Jonjo Shelvey's disciplinary record

Garry Monk was proud of the defensive effort by 10-man Swansea to hold Everton but worried by Jonjo Shelvey's disciplinary record after the midfielder was sent-off.

The former Liverpool player was handed his marching orders 19 minutes from time after picking up a second yellow card in the goalless draw at Goodison Park.

And having already served a suspension for five yellow cards this season, Monk voiced his concerns regarding Shelvey discipline after the match.

He told Sky Sports: "I'm obviously not happy. It's coming in periods of games that's costing us and I thought we were just growing into the game and looking a threat and then we had that and it was a backs to wall job again which is not good.

It's something he is going to have to learn very quickly from - the cheap ones. All-in-all it was a red card so he will have to learn very quickly.
Monk on Shelvey

"It's the cheap ones, like kicking the ball away on the first and it's been that way things have been going for us if any of our players are on a yellow it looks highly likely that any sort of challenge or contact they run the risk of a red card.

"It's something he (Shelvey) is going to have to learn very quickly from - the cheap ones. All-in-all it was a red card so he will have to learn very quickly."

Swansea felt hard done by when their appeals for a penalty for handball by Paraguayan defender Antolin Alcaraz, blocking Shelvey's goalbound effort, fell on deaf ears as referee Kevin Friend waved them aside and Monk felt aggrieved.

"I don't think you're allowed to play with two goalkeepers so it was a good save from him. If my keeper made that save I'll be very pleased.

"Everyone else saw it but apparently the ref didn't see it and that's all that we have to go by."

Overall Monk was 'extremely happy' with the draw which keeps them above the Merseysiders in the Premier League standings.

"Considering where we're playing, who we're playing against and obviously the circumstances we ended up with we're extremely happy and they deserved that, the players.

"The effort they put in throughout the whole game, especially that second period, I thought the point that they got was deserved and credit to them."
