Leaders Sheffield United came from behind to beat lowly Bury 3-1 and extend their advantage at the top of League One to three points.
However, it took two goals in the closing 18 minutes to secure the win and came courtesy of dreadful own goal which enabled the Blades to finally take a 2-1 lead.
The Shakers deservedly went ahead in the 12th minute thanks to a superb 20-yard strike by Jacob Mellis.
Yet the league leaders were level nine minutes later when Billy Sharp was in the right spot to fire home from six yards, after the hosts had failed to clear a John Fleck free-kick.
And the Blades went ahead on 72 minutes with a scrappy goal, when Caolan Lavery's cross was deflected into his own net by Kelvin Etuhu.
Kieron Freeman completed the scoring nine minutes from time, finishing off from close range after collecting Lavery's pass to secure the victory.
Second-place Bolton needed an injury time equaliser to snatch a point at struggling Coventry, with the game ending 2-2.
The Sky Blues went ahead nine minutes before the break, when Marcus Tudgay nodded home Kyel Reid's cross from close range.
The Trotters equalised from the penalty spot, midway through the second half, as Zach Clough located the bottom right-hand corner of the net after Ryan Haynes had grabbed Gary Madine.
But just two minutes later Haynes made amends, providing the assist for Coventry to regain the lead through Stuart Beavon.
However, as Bolton piled on the pressure during the closing 20 minutes, the second equaliser arrived in injury time when Max Clayton crashed the ball home from inside the box.
The point keeps the visitors second in the table, three points behind the Blades.
At Glanford Park, Scunthorpe could have moved back above Bolton had they beaten Peterborough who needed a late equaliser to collect a point in a 1-1 draw.
The hosts took the lead on the stroke of half-time with an excellent free-kick from Josh Morris who curled the ball into the top left corner of the net.
Yet Posh were deservedly level seven minutes from time when Michael Smith's cross struck Charlie Goode and bounced into his own net.
And there was a hat-trick for Josh Magennis at The Valley where Charlton Athletic came from behind to crush Bristol Rovers 4-1.
Jermaine Easter broke clear, rounded keeper Dillon Phillips, and fired Rovers in front before Magennis headed the home side level on 41 minutes from Joe Aribo's free-kick.
Magennis had earlier struck the bar as the hosts chased an equaliser to Easter's 12th minute opener.
And the striker gave the Addicks the lead with his second successful header of the game, five minutes after the break, from yet another Aribo free-kick.
The hosts all but sealed the victory on the hour mark thanks to Aribo's third assist of the afternoon, with Jorge Teixeira sweeping home from close range.
The hat-trick arrived 17 minutes from time although, on this occasion, it was Andrew Crofts who provided the assist as Magennis lashed the ball in from 12 yards.
It was Charlton's second big win over Rovers this season, following their 5-1 hammering of the hosts at the Memorial Stadium in November.
Another side to secure three points, despite falling behind, was Bradford City who beat Northampton Town 2-1 at the Sixfields Stadium.
Mark Marshall was the hero of the afternoon, scoring the Bantams' first goal and then setting up Jordy Hiwula for an 86th-minute winner.
Yet it was Alex Revell who broke the deadlock six minutes before the break with a close-range header from Paul Anderson's cross.
Bradford's much-deserved equaliser on 73 minutes was a low strike from the edge of the area by Marshall who fed Hiwula to notch the winner from close range.
There was another win for in-form Rochdale who scored a goal in each half during their 2-0 triumph over Walsall.
Ian Henderson opened the scoring midway through the first half, converting from close range, while Joe Thompson's low strike made certain of the points 16 minutes from time after latching on to Harrison McGahey's cross.
Cheyenne Dunkley netted the only goal as Oxford United won 1-0 at 10-man Gillingham.
Dunkley's decider arrived in the 66th minute and came courtesy of Chris Maguire's cross.
It got worse for the hosts 10 minutes later when Adedeji Oshilaja collected his second yellow card for a bad foul on Ryan Taylor.
At New Meadow, Devante Cole's ninth-minute goal was enough to earn Fleetwood a 1-0 victory over Shrewsbury.
Milton Keynes Dons dominated possession and chances but drew a blank at Chesterfield, while bottom of the table Oldham will rue a number of missed opportunities in their draw against Port Vale.
And there was certainly no shortage of chances between Swindon Town and Southend United who slipped out of the play-off spots as a result of the draw.
Meanwhile, in the lunchtime kick-off at Kingsmeadow Stadium, AFC Wimbledon came from behind twice to draw 2-2 with in-form Millwall.
Aidan O'Brien's 25-yard strike put the Lions ahead inside five minutes, before Lyle Taylor headed his team's first equaliser from close range following a corner.
Steve Morison restored the visitors' lead five minutes before the break, chipping keeper James Shea from 15 yards, only for the Dons to level matters for a second time in the 50th minute with another header - this time from Tom Elliott.
Both keepers made fine saves as the two teams chased a winner, with the result ending a run of three straight wins for Millwall.
