Rams boss confirms discussions are progressing well

Derby County manager Nigel Clough has revealed that goalkeeper Stephen Bywater is close to agreeing a new contract with the club. Bywater's current deal is due to expire at the end of the season, and last week he voiced his determination to earn fresh terms. The former West Ham United player has emerged as Derby's first-choice shot-stopper of late, and Clough has been delighted with his form. Clough told Evening Telegraph Sport: "We are hoping to be able to announce something in the next couple of days. I know there have been discussions, which have gone very well. "We have been pleased with him. It was a case of looking at both keepers. Roy (Carroll) played in the first three games and it is a bit unfortunate for him that the team has done better in the last few matches. "Stephen has looked better as the games have gone on. "He kept a clean sheet on Saturday. Everybody contributed to that, especially him. He looked very composed and assured. "We have good competition for the goalkeeper position."
