Chris Hughton says Brighton are focused on finishing off the job after seeing his in-form side emerge from "under the radar" into the thick of the automatic promotion race.

Brighton's 3-1 win over relegated Charlton means they are locked on 87 points with top two Burnley and Middlesbrough heading into the final two games.

Sam Baldock opened the scoring early on before Johann Gudmundsson hauled Charlton level six minutes into the second half.

Within minutes, Jiri Skalak restored the visitors' lead before Tomer Hemed's late penalty settled matters to ensure only goal difference is keeping Brighton out of the top two.

"It's a wonderful position to be in and one we would not have expected to be at this stage of the season," said Seagulls manager Hughton, whose side have now won nine games during an unbeaten 12-match

"To be where we are is a credit to the group of lads. I think once you get to this stage the pressure is equal on each of the teams. We are all desperate to get promotion in whatever way that is.

"We've made the goal difference tighter there's no doubt about that. We have scored the goals at the right time. We certainly deserve to be in there with the two other teams."

Brighton meet Middlesbrough in their final game of the season, but Hughton is not looking beyond their penultimate match, which is at home to fifth-placed Derby.

He added: "We have a big game against Derby at home and we must make sure our supporters enjoy what they see. That's our only focus as if we don't do our job in the first game then it will mean nothing.

"A big chunk of the season we went under the radar, but we are not now."

There were familiar protests against Charlton owner Roland Duchatelet orchestrated by the home supporters, which saw beach balls thrown onto the pitch within moments of the kick-off at the Valley.

Despite several stoppages Brighton held their nerve. They made a dream start when Skalak's free-kick caused confusion and Baldock was afforded way too much room to slot home from six yards out after seven minutes.

Gudmundsson hauled Charlton level in the 51st minute but within four minutes Skalek had netted. Anthony Knockaert was brought down late on for a penalty converted by Hemed.

Charlton manager Jose Riga admitted the protests affected his players, saying: "When you see how we started, then you can say yes.

"This is not the first time we have faced this situation. We had the same game against Middlesbrough. We had to be very ready, we were not. The players of Brighton were ready but I don't want any excuse, we know the context.

"The players gave their all and competed. We had a good reaction in the second half and equalised."

He added: "Of course I'd prefer another atmosphere than this one.

"Communication will not be enough. It's about acting and showing some decisions now.

"I don't know the (whole) story. Charlton has a big past. The future can be a good future. I hope the right solution is found.

"That's what I hope for the club. We have to learn from our mistakes. It happens, relegation. We can build something. You see the story of Bournemouth. That is an inspiration for us and a lot of teams."
