Benik Afobe has hit back at critics who have accused him of not trying during his time with Wolves.

The former Arsenal striker, who joined Bournemouth in a £10m deal last month, scored 22 goals in 46 Championship appearances during a year-long stay at Molineux.

But Wanderers' head of recruitment Kevin Thelwell has questioned the 22-year-old's commitment to his former team.

Quoted in the Wolves Express & Star, Thelwell said: "You could list our entire first team squad and see that they were trying. Benik was no longer trying to play for us and that was undermining everything we were trying to achieve."

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey has also questioned his desire to play for the club, but Afobe, who has netted three times since his arrival at Bournemouth, has taken to Twitter to refute the remarks, insisting he only left Wolves to pursue his Premier League dream.

"I wasn't going to comment but this is too shocking and very hurtful," he said. "I did my best. It was hard for us all.

"Some people at Wolves are hanging me out to dry to save their own backs but I won't let my reputation be tarnished.

"I scored 10 and was [in the] top five goalscorers in the league before I left and was accused of not trying. I'm a professional and wouldn't disrespect my team-mates.

"I asked to leave but only because I wanted to play in the Premier League but I never told my team-mates or disrupted the changing room."
