Former Chesterfield striker Jack Lester is set to make a return to the club as manager, according to Sky sources.
Sky Sports News understands the Spireites are currently finalising compensation with Nottingham Forest, where Lester has been working as U18s coach, and they hope to make the appointment by Wednesday.
Lester scored 94 goals in a prolific six-year spell with the Derbyshire club, making well over 200 appearances in all competitions, before retiring in 2014.
Lester's Forest U18s are currently top of the Professional Development League North.
Sky sources understand another former club great - Kevin Davies - has also been under consideration by the Chesterfield board.
But the former Bolton and England forward is yet to take up a full-time coaching role after passing his UEFA A license in 2016.
Davies would be keen on the Chesterfield job, having begun his professional career at the club and reached the 1997 FA Cup semi-finals with them before a move to Southampton.
Chesterfield are currently languishing in the bottom-two of Sky Bet League Two following relegation last season and a poor start under Gary Caldwell, who was sacked last week.
