Rotherham United winger Andy Liddell has set his sights on earning an extended deal with the club after signing an initial month-long contract.
The former Sheffield United and Wigan Athletic man has had a tough summer after leaving Oldham due to personal problems.
But he told
skysports.com that the Millers have helped him get through the tough times after offering him an initial short-term spell.
Grateful
He said: "I'm hoping to stay at Rotherham for as long as possible. I got the call from John Breckin, who was at Oldham when I signed up there, and he told me to come down and show what I can do.
"Mark (Robins) has been great with me since I came and I am very grateful to both of them that they have allowed me to come and play some football.
"It's just a month to start with and it suits both parties as they can take a closer look at what I can bring to the table and it allows me to get back to playing football.
"The summer has been very difficult for personal reasons and football has been the last thing on my mind, but Rotherham have allowed me to get focused on playing again and all I want to do now is do well for the Millers."
Rams test
The much-fancied Millers kicked off the season with a 1-0 victory over Accrington Stanley and they hope to build on that with a cup scalp as they face Championship outfit Derby County in the Carling Cup.
Robins' side beat Sheffield Wednesday, Wolves and Southampton in the competition last season and Liddell believes that they can add the Rams to that list.
He said: "It is a cup game and no one will expect us to beat them.
Derby are a big club that have spent a lot of money over the summer and they will be expected to turn us over, but we showed on Saturday that we can grind results out.
"It's a free game for us because there are two divisions between them and anything can happen in the cups. We've got the quality to win the match, but it will be difficult because they are an extremely good side."
