MK Dons have recalled full-back George Baldock from his loan spell at Oxford.

The news is a blow to the promotion hopes of the Sky Bet League 2 club, who tried to sign Baldock on a permanent basis this month.

The 22-year-old, who joined Oxford on a six-month loan last January and signed a season-long deal in the summer, has been impressive during his time at the Kassam Stadium, prompting Dons boss Karl Robinson to bring him back to Milton Keynes.

"It is unfortunate, from our point of view," Oxford manager Michael Appleton told his club's official website. "George has been magnificent for a 12-month period and has done ever so well for us.

"He is a popular lad in the dressing room so he will be sorely missed and I would like to think MK are getting a player that is certainly better than he was when he first walked in the building.

"I'm frustrated, but the reality is nothing surprises me in football these days and I just want the best for George and the best for Oxford United."

The Dons already have two right-backs in Jordan Spence and Lee Hodson, although the former can also play in central defence.
