Midfielder rejects Bury deal to join local rivals

Experienced midfielder Brian Barry-Murphy has agreed a two-year contract with Rochdale after turning down a new deal at Bury. The 31-year-old was Bury's longest-serving player and had made almost 250 appearances for the club after joining from Sheffield Wednesday six years ago. His contract at Gigg Lane was due to expire at the end of the month and he had been offered terms to stay with Alan Knill's side. Bury had initially been optimistic that Barry-Murphy would sign an extension, but he has opted for a move to their local rivals. Rochdale have secured promotion to League One and Barry-Murphy will lend his experience to Keith Hill's squad next season.
