Kilmarnock are speaking to Billy Davies as they search for a new permanent manager to replace Gary Locke, according to Sky sources.

The former Nottingham Forest, Derby, Preston and Motherwell boss has been out of work since being sacked by Forest nearly two years ago.

Davies is understood to be still receiving compensation following his departure, which could be a potential obstacle to his appointment.

Kilmarnock are believed to be conducting interviews with candidates over the next few days, with the intention of making an appointment by the start of next week.

The club are continuing to receive applications for the post which was vacated by Locke following a 1-0 defeat to Hamilton last Saturday.

Killie are currently second bottom in the Scottish Premiership, 11 points above bottom side Dundee United.

Davies gained promotion with Derby to the Premier League via the playoffs in 2007. He also guided Preston to the playoffs in 2005 and 2006, and took Forest there in 2010 and 2011.

Former Kilmarnock striker Ally McCoist is another candidate in the frame for the job, he has been out of management since December 2014.

McCoist won promotion in successive seasons with Rangers, but left Ibrox by mutual consent with the club trailing Hearts in the Championship promotion race.

His successor, Stuart McCall, who was unable to clinch promotion to the top flight with Rangers, has also been linked with Killie, but its's believed the former Motherwell manager is not in the running.
