Celtic have been fined 10,000 euros (£8,660) by UEFA over the flying of an "illicit banner" at a recent Champions League qualifier.

UEFA's Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body announced the decision after reviewing footage of the game between the Scottish champions and Hapoel Beer-Sheva at Celtic Park on August 17.

In a brief statement, the governing body said it took the action against Celtic FC as the flying of the "illicit banner" contravened Article 16 (2) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations.

During the match against the Israeli side, which Celtic won 5-2 on their way to progressing to the group stages of the tournament, fans at the end housed by the Green Brigade flew a number of Palestine flags.

UEFA forbids political expressions at football matches and a section of Celtic fans, expecting a fine for their display, set up a fund to match any punishment the club may receive. To date, over £130,000 has been raised which is earmarked for Palestinian charities.

In another decision, Legia Warsaw were fined 80,000 euros and ordered to play their next Champions League game behind closed doors following a match against Borussia Dortmund last month which was marred by crowd violence and the setting off of fireworks.
