Gers boss plans to keep players on their toes

Rangers manager Walter Smith has warned his players that no-one is assured a starting berth in his side. Smith demoted goalkeeper Allan McGregor to the substitutes' bench on Sunday, handing Neil Alexander a start in the 2-1 win over Motherwell. Gers sit top of the SPL table after an unbeaten start to the season and, in order to ensure his squad do not rest on their laurels, Smith has revealed he will not be afraid to be ruthless with his team selections this term. He said in the Daily Record: "I have a big squad and every one of them has to show me that they are at the top of their game. "Allan was exceptional last season but I feel there are times when I have to utilise my pool to the full. "I need to keep a keen edge on the squad and I can do that because we don't have the same number of domestic and European matches to play as we had last season. "What has happened to Allan McGregor will happen to more than just him before the season is over but I won't change the team a great deal when we go to Firhill to play Partick Thistle in the Co-operative Insurance Cup in midweek."
