Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers on reports that Scott Sinclair is close to joining the Scottish Premiership champions

Aston Villa forward Scott Sinclair is in Glasgow for a medical ahead of a possible move to Celtic, according to Sky sources.

Villa boss Roberto Di Matteo said on Friday that Celtic had made a fresh offer for Sinclair within the last couple of days.

And Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, who has worked with Sinclair before, hinted that a deal was indeed in the offing when he faced the media on Friday.

"I would hope we could do something between now and the weekend that allows us to get at least one player in before the deadline [for Champions League play-off registration - 11pm Monday]," said Rodgers.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers says he is focusing on their Scottish Premiership opener against Hearts on Sunday

Asked if that player would be Sinclair, he added: "That would be announced as soon as he signs for the club.

"There is no smoke without fire and there has been a lot of smoke, with a lot of players.

"Scott is a player that I know well, of course. I had him in at Chelsea when he was 16 years of age out of Bristol Rovers. I know him probably as well as anyone and I know his qualities.

Celtic will begin their quest for a sixth straight Scottish title at Hearts on Sunday and Rodgers is excited about the domestic campaign.

"Every team provides a challenge and a different challenge," he said.

"It will be tight, it will be the usual suspects up there. Aberdeen have done well, and they are out of Europe now, so that might give them more training time.

"Hearts have been about it and will have a strong squad.

"Rangers coming into the league will fancy that they can do well and there are other teams who can make it very difficult for you. So I am really looking forward to it."
