Striker Leigh Griffiths is out of Celtic's Ladbrokes Premiership trip to Hamilton on Friday night after picking up a calf injury on Scotland duty earlier in the week.

As a result, Boss Brendan Rodgers is set to give a debut to 19-year-old striker Odsonne Edouard, who is on a season-long loan from Paris St Germain.

"I don't think Leigh can play tomorrow, it's as simple as that. He came off (on Monday) and he had a scan on his calf.

Patrick Roberts has returned to Celtic on a season-long loan from Manchester City

"We think he will be fine for Tuesday but yes, there is too much risk.

"Leigh took a knock on his calf and he has had these issues with his calves but we are hopeful this is not going to be that long and playing tomorrow night is a day too soon for him and that, with the AstroTurf pitch, is not ideal for him.

"Yes, there is a chance (Edouard could start). He is in the squad and once we finalise what the team will be then... he has played enough games to be upwards in his fitness.

"He is very quick, very dynamic, technically very strong, of course he is still adapting.

"I don't think he has ever trained at 11 o'clock in the morning in the rain and with the floodlights on. He looked a bit cold this morning.

"He will be adapting to Scottish football."

The Northern Irishman also spoke positively about his other French striker Moussa Dembele, who has only played in the two Champions League qualifiers against Linfield this season.

"He went to Clairefontaine in France for three weeks and did some great work with the medical team there, like he did here before he left," he said.

"He is now back and we will assess him to see where he is at. The most important thing is that we can't risk it.

"Of course everyone would love to be involved in the Paris game but if not then he is not going to be too far away from that and then he is still going to have an impact for the remainder of the Champions League campaign, which is great news.

Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor says there could be fireworks between Scott Brown and Neymar when Celtic face PSG on Tuesday

"But we have to be sure that he is right if he has any involvement in the game on Tuesday."

Meanwhile, Rodgers has welcomed back 20-year-old winger Patrick Roberts, who has returned for a second loan spell from Manchester City.

"I think this season is another progression for Patrick," the former Liverpool and Swansea City boss said.

"Firstly it is great to have him back and see that smile back.

"He is still very young, we have to remember that but this is another step for him this season, playing at Champions League level and I think he can do very well at it."

Roberts will provide competition again for Scotland winger James Forrest, who said: "Obviously Paddy was here for 18 months before.

"A massive club like Celtic are always looking to make the squad stronger so it is good to have competition for places.

"Last year we both had spells and the manager changed it.

"It has started well for me this season and I just want to keep going and keep playing.

"You look at every position, you have two or three players at international level who can play each position, every player knows they will need to keep at it or they will not be playing."

Team news

Hamilton striker Rakish Bingham and midfielder Danny Redmond are both set to play after recovering from injury, although the home side are still awaiting a visa for their new signing from Argentina, striker Antonio Rojano.

Celtic's Scotland striker Griffiths misses the visit to Hamilton due to a calf problem sustained on international duty, with debutant Edouard in line to deputise in his place.
