Rangers boss Mark Warburton has received a timely boost with the news Martyn Waghorn will return sooner than expected.

The former Wigan striker limped out of last weekend's 1-1 home draw with Hamilton Accies clutching his hamstring amid fears of another lengthy lay-off.

But following a scan on Wednesday, the Englishman, who sat out a large part of last season with a knee injury, said he expects to be back in action before the end of the month.

On his official Twitter account, he said: "Good result, not as bad as it could have been. Roughly two weeks out. Hard work has begun to come back stronger. Thank you for the support."

Waghorn, who scored 28 goals last season, will miss games against Dundee and Motherwell but could be in contention for a return against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Friday, August 26.

However, with the international break to follow, Warburton, who was pleased with the news, may keep his striker under wraps until the first Glasgow derby of the season against Celtic at Celtic Park on September 10, live on Sky Sports.

"Martyn had a scan this week and hopefully it is just a grade one or two tear we are looking at, so two to three weeks, fingers crossed, which is good news," Warburton told his club's official website.

"It is a relief in a way because straight after the incident you saw the distress he was in in terms of the injury and it looked bad at the time.

"The medical team looked after him well, he's scanned well, presented well so fingers crossed it's far less worse than first expected."
