Kris Boyd has implored the Rangers board to make sure they get 'a Rangers man' to replace Pedro Caixinha.

The Portuguese's troubled seven-month reign at the club came to an end on Thursday in the aftermath of the 1-1 Premiership draw with Kilmarnock and the disappointing 2-0 League Cup defeat to Motherwell.

Boyd, who played 80 minutes of Wednesday night's game for Kilmarnock, said he did not think Caixinha understood the Rangers way, adding that when the club employees start to grumble then the writing is on the wall.

Boyd told Sky Sports News: "The sacking doesn't come as any surprise as the club has been struggling for months.

Kris Boyd says the Rangers board should appoint a manager who has a connection with the club, following Pedro Caixinha's sacking

"It was time for him to go and you can only judge a man on his results. The people around the club, not just the fans, were fed up and when they turn, when the people inside the building are moaning, then you have problems.

"When you get a new manager you're going to be judged on recruitment and it's been disappointing, to be fair. The fans had started to turn on the back of the semi-final defeat. The fact that senior players were told to stay away last night - Lee Wallace, Kenny Miller and Niko Kranjcar - that is not the Rangers way, and not the way to behave as a Rangers manager.

"Last night there was a nervousness right away, every bad pass every mistake, you could here the frustration. The core of Rangers fans they have been left disappointed but it doesn't come as shock after the Luxembourg result in the Europa League. I don't know if he was the man to take the club forward.

"Over the years apart from Dick Advocaat, the ones that have success have been ones that have grown up grown up as Rangers men, same at Celtic - the ones that have success are the ones that know the club.

"Now they they need someone who knows the club and knows the DNA. That starts from the top as well.

"Dave King is a on flight back to South Africa and I worry where the money is going to come from in the future, as there is a serious amount of investment needed to close the gap on Celtic.

"There's a series of outstanding candidates, Billy Davies, Derek McInnes and Alex McLeish have been mentioned. Without stating the obvious, it has to be someone who knows the club and can get results week in week out.

"You don't need to win pretty every week, you just need to win."

Another former Ibrox favourite Alex Rae backed the claims of McLeish to return to his former stomping ground and revive the fortunes of the club.

He said: "They have to go with steady hand, someone who is familiar with the Scottish landscape. I know Alex (McLeish) as player and I worked with him in Belgium so maybe they go with someone like that.

"They need someone who knows the club and knows what it takes to manage the club. The pressure is very different from other clubs."
