Former Rangers forward Nacho Novo spells out the requirements for Steven Gerrard on his first day as Rangers manager.

Steven Gerrard must win trophies at Rangers if he is to be deemed a success in Scotland, according to Nacho Novo.

Gerrard officially began his spell in charge of the Ibrox club on Friday after signing a four-year deal on May 4.

The 38-year-old has been tasked with ending Celtic's recent domination of Scottish football and Novo insists the minimum requirement for the former Liverpool captain is to win at least one piece of silverware.

When asked what Gerrard should aim to achieve at Ibrox, Novo said: "To compete and obviously win a trophy. He must win a trophy.

"Just get the right mentality in the players - if you have to win wrong, then win wrong. Try to win one trophy at least."

Novo believes Gerrard is capable of building a squad that can compete with Celtic for major honours next season.

"I've got a good feeling about Steven Gerrard," said Novo, who scored 73 goals in 255 games during a six-year spell with Rangers.

"I know he hasn't got experience but he's got Gary McAllister with him. It is the most difficult thing to have your first job at Rangers. The pressure here is big - you saw with the other managers.

Lee McCulloch says Steven Gerrard will command the instant respect of the dressing room at Rangers.

"But Gerrard is a winner. I've got a good feeling he could attract a lot of good players, create a good team and challenge for the league against Celtic."

Lee Wallace and Kenny Miller were fined by Rangers on Thursday for the disorder that followed the Scottish Cup semi-final loss to Celtic and Novo believes the biggest challenge facing Gerrard is uniting the Ibrox dressing room after a number of lean years.

"To manage the players, that is the biggest thing for me," he said. "The last few managers, some players lost respect and that should not be allowed at a club like Rangers."
