Derek McInnes has criticised Rangers for how they have handled their ongoing and drawn-out managerial search.

McInnes remains Gers' number one choice to replace the sacked Pedro Caixinha, who now has another job after four weeks of Graeme Murty as Rangers caretaker.

McInnes said last week that he "totally endorsed" Aberdeen chairman Stewert Milne's claim that his manager was going nowhere, but Sky Sports Scottish football pundit Kris Commons insists McInnes has only himself to blame for not putting an end to speculation himself.

After losing for the second time in four days to Rangers on Sunday, live on Sky Sports, McInnes said: "I made my position clear a few weeks ago and this has been ongoing.

"It just feels as if it has dragged on and on. I'm not happy with how things have played out. I know [the press] have a job to do and must be getting fed some sort of stuff, so there has been plenty of encouragement to run stories.

"Everybody seems to be in the know and every other day there is someone giving an opinion on my future, and what Rangers are doing. It's not been as straightforward as it should have been the last few weeks.

"It's wrong for me to make a comment on speculation or assumption. I'm manager of Aberdeen and my job is to get a winning team on the pitch."

After being left stunned that McInnes forgot members of his own starting line-up and stating that it must "ring alarm bells for Aberdeen supporters", Commons said: "There's a reason why there's speculation.

"The reason it's been going on for four weeks, if Derek addressed the public and said 'I do not want the Rangers job, I'm happy at Aberdeen'... he's never said that.

"He's not once come out and said 'you're wasting your time'. I just think, if he did that, the speculation would be ended. It will be interesting to see what happens next."
