Rangers capitalised on the Steven Gerrard feel-good factor as they struck late to grab a crucial 1-0 win over Kilmarnock.

The former Liverpool and England skipper was confirmed as the new Gers boss on Friday after signing a four-year deal.

He was not there to see Steve Clarke's men frustrate the Ibrox faithful for long periods but the Gers support - so despondent after last week's record 5-0 Old Firm hammering - were cheering again as David Bates grabbed the late winner as they closed to within a point of second-placed rivals Aberdeen.

Jamie Maclaren's missed penalty cost Hibernian the chance to move up the table as they drew a blank away at the Dons.

The two sides are in direct competition for second place, but it was Aberdeen who emerged the more content after a 0-0 draw at Pittodrie.

Visiting Hibs had the two best chances, and it was Maclaren who spurned both of them with a miss from the spot and a wasted header, meaning Neil Lennon's side remain three points adrift of the Dons, who are now just one point clear of Rangers.

The 35-year-old produced a masterclass in penalty-box play in his 203rd and final game for Saints before a summer move to Hearts.

MacLean will sit out Tuesday's game on Hamilton's artificial surface because of long-standing knee problems and is suspended for the final match of the campaign, but he ensured Saints have a real chance of claiming a seventh-placed finish.

Dundee all but secured their Premiership status following a 1-0 win over fellow relegation battlers Hamilton at Dens Park.

The home side had the best of the first half and deserved the lead given to them by left-back Kevin Holt's 18th-minute drive.
