The veteran midfielder's sixth of the season settled it at Falkirk Stadium and ensured the visitors took full advantage of Dunfermline's home defeat to Airdrie.
Morton travelled with an unbeaten record away from home in the league, and they were close to an opener when Peter MacDonald tested Bairns goalkeeper Michael McGovern from distance.
Falkirk responded, Conor McGrandles denied by an offside flag, and Morton's Mark McLaughlan was inches away from an own goal moments after the break.
Derek Gaston then clawed Thomas Grant's free-kick back from the goal-line - with the home fans screaming for a goal - as Falkirk's pressure grew.
But the goal came at the other end, Hardie bundling in from close range after the home defence failed to clear a free-kick, and only McGrandles' goal-line clearance denied Kevin Rutkiewicz a second late on.
