Motherwell fans clashed with stewards and police after watching their team crash to 3-2 defeat to Morton in the Scottish League Cup at Cappielow.

Alex Samuel looked to have secured Morton's passage to the quarter-finals when he fired a shot into the roof of the net after the ball came off the heel of Motherwell defender Stephen McManus.

But three minutes into stoppage-time substitute Scott McDonald swept the ball into the net after Lionel Ainsworth had delivered a low cross from the wing.

Morton were soon back in front when Samuel converted Denny Johnstone's low cross in the early stages of extra-time.

United hit back 10 minutes before the break when Callum Morris met a cross from Scott Fraser to score against his former club.

Ryan Wallace was guilty of an awful miss for the visitors as half-time approached when he rounded goalkeeper Zwick but hacked his shot across goal rather than hitting the back of the net.

The home side took the lead six minutes into extra-time when Fraser danced past two Pars defenders before placing the ball past Sean Murdoch from 18 yards.

And then two minutes later Blair Spittal secured the win with a fine finish from inside the penalty area.

Ross County booked their place in the last eight with a resounding 7-0 victory over Championship side Falkirk.

Liam Boyce set up the win with a 10-minute hat-trick shortly before the interval, the first coming when Richard Foster delivered the ball back into the box as Falkirk struggled to clear a corner, and the Irish striker netted with a powerful header.

Five minutes later another Jonathan Franks corner cause Falkirk problems and Boyce score with a cheeky back-heel.

Boyce completed his hat-trick five minutes later when he got on the end of another Foster delivery to head down into the net from the six-yard box.

Two minutes after the break Brian Graham laid the ball off for Raffaele De Vita who flashed an angled drive into the far corner of the net.

And De Vita was involved again eight minutes later when he cut the ball back from the goal-line and Franks smashed a shot from eight yards high into the net.

It got worse for the Bairns four minutes later when Graham headed a deep cross from Stewart Murdoch in from close range.

The rout was completed when another pin-point delivery from Murdoch in the 81st minute was swept into the net by Darren Holden.

Highland rivals Inverness Caley also progressed with a 2-0 victory over bottom of the Championship Livingston at Almondvale.

The Scottish Cup holders took the lead on 12 minutes when Morgyn Neill misjudges a header back to the goalkeeper and Miles Storey pounced to beat the advancing Darren Jamieson to tap home.

More sloppy defending by the home side allowed Caley Thistle to secure the win just before the interval when Daniel Devine arrived unmarked to meet a Greg Tansey free-kick and double the lead.
