Referee Tony Chapron could face punishment after he kicked out at Nantes defender Diego Carlos during Paris St Germain's 1-0 win.
The official aimed a kick at Carlos while on the floor at the Stade de la Beaujoire on Sunday after the pair accidentally collided in injury time.
Carlos was shown a second yellow card, apparently for dissent, but Chapron was left to try to explain himself to the baffled Nantes team at the end.
Angel Di Maria's 12th-minute winner earned PSG a seventh straight win in all competitions and saw them move 11 points clear at the top of Ligue 1.
But they were made to work hard as Emiliano Sala had a goal disallowed for offside in the second half.
Earlier, Lyon's title hopes suffered a blow after they were held to a 1-1 draw by 10-man Angers.
Nabil Fekir's second-half equaliser rescued a point for the hosts after Karl Ekambi's penalty for the strugglers shocked the high flyers.
Flavien Tait was sent off late on for the visitors but Lyon could not force a winner.
The draw lifted Angers up to third from bottom in their battle for survival and they are two points behind Troyes.
Earlier, St Etienne gave their survival hopes a boost after claiming their first Ligue 1 win since October over relegation rivals Toulouse.
Robert Beric's first-half penalty and Assane Diousse's late effort clinched a 2-0 victory for Jean-Louis Gasset's side to end a run of 10 league games without a win.
They moved four points clear of Toulouse, who remain in the bottom three.
