Striker set to be given chance to stay with champions

Lyon have confirmed the club are hoping to agree a new contract with Brazilian striker Fred. The 25-year-old's current deal expires at the end of the season and he has been linked with Roma and French rivals Marseille. Fred admitted last week that his priority is to stay with Lyon and the Ligue 1 champions are also keen to prolong the association. "The chairman talked to him at the end of the match against (Steaua) Bucharest and again on Saturday at Monaco to set up a meeting," Lyon's special adviser Bernard Lacombe told Le 10 Sport. "With the coach Claude Puel, we will meet him to tell him about our interest."

Cup disappointment

Meanwhile, Puel expressed his disappointment after Lyon suffered a surprise 3-1 home defeat by Metz in the League Cup on Tuesday night. Puel said: "Being eliminated from a competition at home is obviously a big disappointment. "It is out of the question for me to point the finger at any player. As we all win together, we all lose together - staff and players. "We have not been good. We didn't put enough quality in our game to try to qualify."
